Running against the 4-3[]

Base 4-3 has run holes against weak-side B-gap ISO, strong side lead trap, weak side sweep/toss, and strong side Power that can be exploited 1

The B Gap Bubble[]

Weak Side B Gap ISO

The B gap bubble is a promising place to attack the 4-3 with a running attack.

One of the simplest ways to exploit this is with the Weak Side B-gap ISO, bringing the FB to kick out the WLB on the lead block. This can be even more effective when the defense lines up the weak side DE or WLB out wide to bring pressure.

With a mobile QB and a single back offense, a QB ISO can also be used effectively to exploit this gap.

Trap the Strong 3 Tech[]

Another 2-back option is a strong side lead trap. This can offset an aggressive DT, creating big gaps in the middle. This play is less effective if a smart SS is sitting up in the box.

Toss/Sweep/Stretch to Weak Side[]

Toss Weak vs 4-3

This is especially effective when the defense lines up in 3-deep coverage, since the FS will have significant ground to cover to catch up to the RB.

If the FB and LT cannot secure their blocks, this play will not make it very far.

Power Run to Strong Side[]

If the strong side DE is wide, then RG and RT will collapse on the NT, and leaving the pulling guard to hit the SLB.

Patience and vision are key to this run, as the hole may develop in the B or C gap, and may take a bit to get setup.

Scheme Fit[]

In Madden Schemes, an "attacking 4-3" will favor Speed Rusher DEs, while a base "4-3" will favor run stop DE players.
