A player is a person who plays in the National Football League. Players are generally hired on one of the NFL teams, which there are currently 32 of. Each player that plays for an NFL team signs a contract which allows them to play for a team as a paid job, usually receiving millions of dollars per year.
Each team has around 50 players on it at once. During the pre-season, teams have up to 90 players (since Apr 23, 2012), but the limit is reduced to 53 during the main season, forcing teams to determine which players they most want on the team. Other players must be dropped into free agency. However, each team must have between a minimum and maximum amount of players for each position.
Player position[]
- Main article: Position
Players take various "positions" in the NFL, which determine their role in NFL games, and are highly specialized and trained to perform well at that role. Quarterbacks pass (throw) the ball to other players in pass plays. The kicker must kick the ball to the other team when a new half starts, or when the team takes a kicking play, which usually occurs when the team is close to their own endzone and they are on the fourth down. Many other positions exist in the NFL.
