Timeouts are calls used to suspend the game. Three timeouts are allocated to both teams per half, and two more if the game enters an overtime period. Timeouts are generally used to force the game clock to stop counting down until the next play starts, in order to have extra time until the game ends, and thus additional plays that can be used to score a touchdown or field goal in order to gain more points than the other team to win the game.
