Ultimate Team (commonly referred to as MUT) is an online game mode in the Madden NFL series that first appeared in Madden NFL 10. The goal of Ultimate Team is to level up a custom team with different tiered trading cards to the highest possible, while competing against AI opponents, or online players with their own teams.

Ultimate Team also appears in other EA Sports games such as EA FC (formally EA's FIFA series), and similar game modes have appeared in other sports franchises, such as 2K Sports' MyTeam mode for NBA 2K.

Cards[]

Cards are items in MUT that you can put in sets or to use for your team. Cards contain players, contracts, and collectibles. You can obtain these virtual trading cards by opening packs or getting them from the Market. They have specific tiers and overalls. The tiers are Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Elite. Overalls range from 0-99.

Sets[]

Some cards are eligible for sets, or collections. You have to put a certain amount of cards in a set to get the a set reward, which can be a player or a collectible.

Item Market[]

Players are able to put their cards on the Auction House for virtual MUT coins. (you can use coins to buy cards and packs) They can also put their cards on the trading block to get other cards.

Monetization[]

Players can use real life money to pay for items in this mode, granting Electronic Arts an extra source of revenue. This has resulted in criticism of the game mode for pay to win elements where players who pay lots of money can gain a major advantage over players who spend little or no money on the mode, as well as potential gambling mechanics and themes brought by the game mode. Criticism over EA focusing on improving this game mode instead of fixing game bugs and glitches or improving the general gameplay experience or other game modes not as monetized has also been expressed by fans.

Points are the pay to win way madden wants you to go (The "best deal" is: 12000 + 4000 for 99.99, is it the best, yes is it over priced, also yes) and buy random things (special bundles are only purchasable from point but there are a few exceptions) from the market, and jerseys (purchasable for a pretty penny of coins) for you ultimate team.

The money spent on one year in Ultimate Team would eventually go to waste once the game's servers get shut down (eg. Madden NFL 20's servers being retired on April 15, 2024.)
